Dialing up on the recent success of the NFL's Pittsburgh Steelers by playing in the upcoming Super Bowl, the American Hockey League's Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins have pandered to their fan base who also follow the Pittsburgh sports franchises.
Via their twitter account, the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins have released a "twitpic" of the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza arena floor getting ready for the next game this coming Friday February 4 against the Manitoba Moose. So, the tribute to the Steelers opens themselves up to some criticism. Should they have done this in an area understood as Eagles-territory, on top of that, mix the two sports together?
The Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins have been a franchise to try just about anything and everything gimmicky to keep the fan interest. From every holiday celebration to the more honorable breast cancer and public service honor nights, the Penguins fans have supported them for 12 years. If a fan collected all the Jerseys that the AHL Penguins have worn on the ice, there would be a closet full.
So, it's a gimmick thing used to get a little bit of publicity, but I think in most instances, the AHL Penguins have worked to keep up the interest of it's fans.
