Demers to Serve in Canadian Senate

A fascinating situation arose out of Ottawa today as Canadian Prime Minister Steven Harper welcomed former NHL coach Jaques Demers to the Canadian Senate for the ruling conservative party.

Of course this opens the doors for the political jokes to pour in from Dippers and the Libs. Knowing full well of this story from long long ago, Demers has really been and inspiration of what a person can achieve after they overcome their handicaps.
He was born into poverty in a home with a violent, alcoholic father who beat his mother regularly and verbally abused him so often -- calling him "stupid" and "dumb," according to his memoirs -- that he dropped out of school after the 8th grade and worked as a soft-drink truck driver.
Conservatives have a real rags to riches story going for them and I am glad that the Canadian government can use someone like the former coach Demers.
